Delhi HC dismisses Jagdish Tytler, arms dealer Abhishek Verma's plea in corruption case

New Delhi [India], October 17 (ANI): Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler and arms dealer Abhishek Verma, challenging the framing of charges against them in a forgery case.

The case dates back to 2009, when Tytler and Verma allegedly forged a letterhead in the name of then minister of state for home Ajay Maken, and addressed it to the Prime Minister requesting to ease visa norms for a Chinese telecom firm.

Acting upon the complaint of Maken, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against Tytler and Verma in 2013, under section 469 of the IPC which relates to forgery for purpose of harming reputation.

Although Verma is the key accused, CBI, in its charge sheet stated that the Congress leader "actively connived" with Verma in the forgery.

On December 9, 2015, a trial court framed charges under various sections of IPC against the duo, including 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 420 (cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and under section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act dealing with taking gratification by corrupt or illegal means to influence public servant.

Jagdish Tytler, who was out on bail, and Abhishek Verma who was in judicial custody under charges of various other cases, had then moved the High Court against the trial court's verdict. (ANI)
