New Delhi [India], October 29 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Tuesday granted approval for 111 more shops and commercial establishments to operate 24 hours a day. This initiative by the government aims to enhance economic activity in Delhi and generate new employment opportunities, as per an official release.
According to the release, the proposal for 24-hour operation was submitted by the Labour Department. All establishments fall within the commercial, retail trade, or business categories, and the government will maintain strict oversight.
"Strict action will be taken for any violations of the provisions and regulations of the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954," CM Atishi said.
Establishments granted 24-hour operation must strictly adhere to Sections 14, 15, and 16 of the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954. In summer, female employees cannot work between 9 PM and 7 AM, and in winter, between 8 PM and 8 AM. Shops must open and close within the designated hours; violations could lead to establishment closure. Shops are allowed an additional 15 minutes if customers are waiting. Opening and closing times may vary by area, and owners must comply.
The Labour Department had received applications from 175 entities wishing to operate 24/7. After a thorough review, 111 applications met the required standards and were approved.
In recent years, the number of establishments seeking 24-hour operation permits has significantly increased. "CM Atishi has been approving 24-hour operation for establishments that meet all criteria. Earlier, 23 establishments were granted this permission in February, followed by 32 in January, 29 in August 2023, and 83 in November 2023. With the approval granted on Tuesday, the total number of establishments permitted to operate round-the-clock now exceeds 700," added the Labour Department.
The Delhi government is committed to creating a business-friendly environment and supporting economic growth. "The increase in applications for 24-hour operation reflects the positive stance of the government," noted CM Atishi. The aim is to create more job opportunities and promote overall economic growth in Delhi, benefiting businesses and consumers alike by providing continuous access to essential goods and services, the release added.
