New Delhi (India) Mar 8 (ANI): Auto rides in the national capital are all set to get costlier as the government on Friday hiked auto fares by increasing the tariffs.
A commuter will now have to shell out Rs. 25 for the first 1.5 kilometres instead of 2 kilometres. Instead of the Rs. 8 per kilometre basic fare, Delhites will now have to pay Rs. 9 per kilometre after the first 1.5 kilometres of the ride.
Announcing the revision, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot tweeted, "Delhi Cabinet approves revision of auto fares. Last revision in 2013. I. Base fare will be Rs 25 for first 1.5 km II. Per km fare will be Rs 9.50 / km III. Waiting charges of 75p / minute applicable for every minute when vehicle is stationary or stuck in traffic or moving very slow."
In a major blow to the residents of the national capital, the 15 minute limit of free waiting has been omitted, as a charge of Rs. 0.75 per minute would be levied when the vehicle is completely stationary. The charge would also be levied if the auto is moving at a speed of less than 6 kilometres per hour, that is, covering less than 1 km in 10 minutes.
However, there is no effect on the night and luggage charges, which remain unchanged at 25 per cent extra between 11 pm and 5 am and Rs. 7.50 as luggage charge.
These charges would be effective after the Delhi government passes a gazette notification in this regard. (ANI)
