DCW, Punjab police act on husband's complaint, rescue wife from her parents

New Delhi [India], Feb 14 (ANI): The Delhi Commission for Women on Thursday said it helped rescue a girl from Punjab, following a complaint by her husband who alleged that she was confined and tortured by her parents who were opposed to their marriage. 
The rescue operation began after a 23-year-old man (husband) from Hanumangarh in Rajasthan asked the DCW for 'urgent' help fearing that he and his wife would be killed by the girl’s parents who were opposed to their marriage. 
Based on his complaint, the DCW directed the Punjab Police to rescue the girl who was being forcefully detained after marriage by her parents in Fazilka, Punjab. Following which, the Punjab police started investigating the case and rescued the girl from her parents. The rescued girl was later brought to Delhi. 
Chairperson of the DCW Swati Maliwal said: “It is sad that even in today’s world, people hold their so-called ‘honour’ more than the lives of their children. I appeal to all to not take law in their hands and to report such crimes urgently to the Commission. The cases of honour killing are increasing and the government should create a law to deal with the same.”
The couple, belonging to different castes, had married against the wishes of the girl’s family in Punjab. The father and uncle of the girl openly claimed that they will kill the couple in case the relationship continued. In an ugly turn of events, the girl was once forced to consume pesticide during a quarrel as the family stated that their honour was more precious than their daughter.
The complainant alleged that he earlier wrote to Punjab Women Commission to look into the matter, however, they didn't pay heed to his request. He also said that his wife's uncle owns a revolver and he had earlier threatened the couple. 
Taking a serious note of the issue, the DCW wrote to the Punjab Police to register a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of law and also revoke the license of the revolver of the girl’s uncle, if he has a revolver. (ANI)
