Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], March 20 (ANI): Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal on Thursday announced that the curfew in Kapil Van and Nandangarh PS areas has been lifted, marking a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the region.
However, the law and order situation remains a concern, with 80 people and 11 minors currently in police custody in connection with the recent violence.
Speaking to the media, Singal said, "Curfew has been lifted in Kapil Van and Nandangarh PS areas. 80 people and 11 minors are in police custody..."
This comes after the violence erupted on Monday night in central Nagpur's Chitnis Park, with stones hurled at police amid rumours that a holy book of a community was burnt during an agitation. As many as 34 police personnel were injured in the violence, and a curfew was subsequently imposed in sensitive areas.
Commissioner Singal also provided an update on the investigation, revealing that the accused, Fahim Khan, was seen moving around in two or three places. The police are conducting further probes to unravel the circumstances surrounding the violence.
"His (accused Fahim Khan) movement has been seen at 2-3 places.; further probe is underway," he said.
In addition to lifting the curfew in some areas, the police have deployed over 2,000 armed personnel in sensitive areas, with quick response teams and riot control police conducting patrols led by a DCP-rank officer.
In a recent development, Maharashtra Police's Cyber cell said that one of the accused in the Nagpur violence "edited and circulated videos" and "glorified violence" on social media, which led to the riots spreading in various parts of the city.
"He (Faheem Khan) edited and circulated the video of the protest against Aurangzeb due to which the riots spread. He also glorified violent videos," cyber cell's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani told ANI here.
The police have registered four FIRs in connection with the riots which took place on Monday night in Nagpur.
"Four FIRs have been registered. The first FIR is that videos of the protest against Aurangzeb were edited and circulated, and violence was glorified in the videos. The second is about making clips about the violence and spreading them so that there would be violence between two communities. Third is multiple posts were made in which violence was further instigated," Matani said.
Accused Faheem Khan was arrested on March 19; he has been remanded in custody till Friday, March 21. Khan is a leader of the Minorities Democratic Party (MD). He was arrested just after the police filed an FIR regarding the riots.
Earlier today, Nagpur's Collector Vipin Itankar said that normalcy has been restored in the area, but curfew is still in place in some parts of the city.
Nagpur Police have arrested 50 people, including seven minors, following the violent clashes that erupted on March 17, an official said on Wednesday.
The arrests were made following an investigation into the unrest, during which CCTV cameras were also damaged. Authorities are probing the involvement of the alleged mastermind and assessing the sequence of events leading up to the violence. (ANI)
