New Delhi [India], November 16 (ANI): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar attended the National Press Day celebrations on Thursday.
He also addressed the attendees of the event and spoke about the negative impact of fake news and wrong information on social media.
Credibility is the biggest challenge that the media is facing today, VP Dhanker said, adding that the role of editors has become even more challenging in contemporary times.
"Fake news, deliberately fed wrong and mischievous information, political ambitions and preferences, tendency to play power brokers and monetary considerations have eroded people's faith in the media. Credibility is the biggest challenge that the media is facing today. It is surprising that this aspect is being blissfully ignored in some quarters," said the Vice President.
He further said that fake news has never been heard so loud and it has never resonated in ears with high-decibel as it is today.
He further said, "Over the years journalism landscape has evolved and expanded. The expansion has been geometric. Today along with print media, we have digital media, television media, and social media. Recent technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence have presented unique challenges before us. It is vital for us to understand the profound impact of AI upon our media landscape."
He said that the media is the beacon of information and the voice of the voiceless.
Further speaking on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Dhanker said,"The advent of AI has transformed the way we receive and consume news. AI has become an integral part of daily lives. Disruptive technologies are taking control of our system. The role of editors has become even more challenging as they now have to act as gatekeepers and remove any false doctored information before it poisons the sea of information.
National Press Day is observed on November 16 every year in India to celebrate the importance of a free and responsible press in a democratic society.
It is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India, which acts as a regulatory body for the news media in the country. (ANI)
