Leh (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Oct 21 (ANI): The Congress Party has registered a clean sweep in the 13 wards in the Municipal Committee Elections in Leh.
The result was declared on Saturday by Deputy Commissioner/District Election Officer Avny Lavasa in presence of all the contesting candidates.
After long 13 years, the elections for the municipal committee were conducted in Jammu and Kashmir and for the first time in Leh district. In Leh, 29 candidates, including 19 males and 10 females, contested for the 13 wards in which four seats were reserved for women.
Other than 13 candidates each from Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), three independent candidates also contested in the election. The People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC) boycotted the local urban elections across the state.
In Leh, the elections were held on October 8 during which 54.2 per cent electorates had exercised their voting right at 21 polling stations, which included 3,780 male and 4,030 female voters out of the total 14401 voters in Leh municipal area.
13 Congress candidates, namely Stanzin Norboo-Gongpa/Gangles, Tsering Angmo-Sankar/Yurtung, Deldan Gawa Otsal-Chanspa-Karzoo, Ishey Namgyal-Tukcha, Yangchan Dolma-Shenam, Stanzin Dawa-Skara, Chewang Norboo-Skalzangling, Rinchen Dolkar-Murtse, Skalzang Namgyal-Housing Colony B, Stanzin Jungnas-Housing Colony A, Konchok Sangrup-Maney Tsilding, Shazia Bano-Skampari, and Mohd Din Khan-Zangsti/Skynos emerged victorious.
In total, 52 civic bodies went to polls in four phases amid tight security arrangements in the state. A total of 3372 nominations were filed for 1145 wards.
Out of 79 municipal bodies, 27 did not go to polls owing either to the fact that there was no candidate or that only one candidate had filed nominations for a particular ward. (ANI)
