Congress slams MP govt over three contaminated water deaths in Indore; seeks ₹1 cr compensation for kin

Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], December 31 (ANI): The issue of deaths allegedly caused by consumption of contaminated water in Bhopal and Indore has intensified, with the Congress launching a sharp attack on the state government, accusing it of gross negligence and administrative failure.
Senior Congress leader and former minister PC Sharma alleged that the incident occurred due to the government's failure to ensure safe drinking water for citizens. He demanded that the families of those who lost their lives be provided a compensation of Rs 1 crore each, along with a government job for one member of every affected family.
"The deaths caused by drinking contaminated water are a result of the government's negligence. The families of the deceased must be given justice. We demand compensation of Rs 1 crore and a government job for one member of each affected family," Sharma said.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Manak Agarwal accused the state government of attempting to suppress the matter. He said the party would not allow the issue to be brushed under the carpet and would continue to raise it at every level.
"The government is trying to cover up this incident, but Congress will not allow that to happen. Those responsible must be held accountable," Agarwal said.
He further demanded the immediate resignation of the Indore Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner, holding them responsible for the alleged lapse in ensuring clean drinking water for residents.
Meanwhile, Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said three deaths have been officially confirmed due to contaminated water, though he claims the total may be seven. Over 116 people have fallen ill, with 36 already discharged.
He said the municipal corporation is working on the ground, going door-to-door to ensure proper treatment. The Chief Minister has taken note of the situation and announced ₹2 lakh assistance for families of the deceased, along with free treatment for all affected.
"The health department has officially confirmed the deaths of three people. However, according to my information, the total number of deaths due to illness is seven. Thirty-six people have been discharged. More than 116 people are reported to be ill. The Indore Municipal Corporation's health department is constantly working with the people to resolve their problems. Our priority is that people receive good treatment and recover quickly. Our entire council is going door-to-door and talking to people. We are all deeply saddened by this unfortunate situation. The entire municipal corporation is reaching out to people in all areas and ensuring that they receive proper care in hospitals. The Chief Minister has also taken notice of this. He has instructed that the families of the deceased receive Rs 2 lakh in assistance and that everyone receives free treatment," he said.
