Arun Jaitley slams Congress on Tuesday

New Delhi (India), December 4 (ANI): In the backdrop of recently-held farmers' protest march in Delhi, Union Finance Minister and Corporate Affairs Arun Jaitley asserted that inadequacy of the resources pumped into the agricultural sector by the Congress had led to both an agrarian distress and an inadequate quality of life in the rural areas.
In a blog post, Jaitley has compared the performances of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) governments and said, "The NDA Government planned a multi-pronged strategy to improve the quality of life in Indian villages, to enlarge quantum of investment and to make the Indian farmer self-sufficient and farming remunerative rather than be only dependent on State agencies."
"Removing the agrarian distress and improving the quality of life in rural areas cannot be done by slogans alone. From 1971 onwards, the Congress policy was slogans and not resources," Jaitley said.
He further said that the NDA has pumped in resources into the rural areas improving the infrastructure, quality of life of people living therein and agricultural productivity. "The past four and half years is just the beginning. If this level of investment with its annual increase is continued in the rural areas for at least the next two decades, we will be close to providing a quality of life and infrastructure in rural areas which is more urban like," he said.
A farmers' rally was organised at Delhi's Jantar Mantar against the ongoing rural distress on November 30. More than one lakh farmers, belonging to 200 farmers organisations participated in the rally to push for their demands including implementation of the MS Swaminathan Committee report, farm loan waiver and better Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their agricultural produce.
Congress chief Rahul, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury, veteran politician Sharad Yadav among others took part in the rally.(ANI)
