Commuters disappointed as Delhi Metro rides get costlier

New Delhi [India], October 10 (ANI): After Delhi Metro rides got costlier from today, the commuters are a little disappointed and have said that they might want to shift to other modes of transport.

"The fare has increased suddenly and substantially. I wish it had been done in a phased manner. People might shift to other modes of transport now," a Delhi Metro commuter told ANI.

"The Delhi Metro fare hike will affect my budget by Rs. 700, but if we want facilities similar to America, then we'll have to pay," another metro commuter said.

One of the commuters said that even after paying the hiked price, people suffer.

"The authorities say that the Metro is running in losses, but while travelling, we have witnessed that there is no space in the Metro to even step in. There is no improvement in facilities, but the fares are hiked," he said.

The decision to increase the fares was taken after the meeting of Delhi Metro Fare Fixation Committee on Monday.

The confirmation came after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) refused to defer metro fare hike despite Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's opposition to it.

As part of the two phase revision of Metro fares recommended by the Committee, the fare would remain Rs. 10 for the first 2 km, but will subsequently increase by Rs. 10 in each slab, going up to a maximum of Rs. 60.

The Metro fares were last revised in May when the minimum tariff was raised from Rs. 8 to Rs. 10.

The revised fare structure will be: up to 2 km - Rs. 10, 2-5 km - Rs. 20, 5-12 km - Rs. 30, 12-21 km - Rs. 40, 21-32 km - Rs. 50 and for journeys beyond 32 km - Rs. 60. (ANI)
