Chandigarh [India], October 14 (ANI): Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Tuesday met the family members of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died allegedly by suicide at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. He assured them that their demands will be fulfilled and action will be taken without delay.
"This tragic incident highlights the existing social evils, showing how even in the 21st century, people are persecuted based on caste, creed, and religion... Today, I have come to meet the family not as Chirag Paswan, but as a member of their family. I bring the assurance of our government and assure them that every demand of the family will be fulfilled, and action will be taken swiftly and without delay... If this family does not get justice, no Dalit family will think about joining the mainstream. I assure you that this family will get justice. No matter how high a position a person holds, action will be taken against them," Paswan said after meeting the family of late IPS officer.
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met the family and offered condolences to his family members, acknowledging Puran Kumar's services and integrity in public life.
He was accompanied by several senior Haryana Congress leaders, reflecting the party's solidarity with the bereaved family, including Deepender Singh Hooda, a Member of Parliament; Gaurav Moolana, a senior Congress leader; Kumari Selja, a former Union Minister; and Rao Dan Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly.
In a late-night decision on Monday, the Haryana government sent Director-General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur on leave, according to the sources.
Earlier, Haryana Government issued a statewide directive urging strict vigilance and coordinated efforts to maintain communal harmony and law and order.
The directive, issued by the General Administration Department (Political Branch-I) on Sunday, has been sent to senior administrative and police officials across the state - including the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Director General of Police (DGP), all Divisional Commissioners, ADGPs, IGs, Deputy Commissioners, and Commissioners/Superintendents of Police.
The circular emphasises the "urgent need to maintain strict vigil and ensure communal harmony across all districts and divisions" in view of tensions and public sensitivity surrounding the officer's death.
All officers have been instructed to remain in close coordination with local organisations and community leaders, continuously monitor the situation, and take all necessary measures to uphold peace and public order. It further directs that any development with the potential to disturb communal harmony should be dealt with immediately, and timely reports must be submitted for review. (ANI)
