New Delhi [India], Feb 14 (ANI): The central government has raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sugar from Rs 29 to Rs 31 per kilogram for 2018-19.
“Because of the growing arrears of the sugarcane farmers, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has, for the year 2018-19, raised the MSP for sugar from Rs 29 to Rs 31 per kilogram. This step will help sugar mills get adequate funds, which will ensure that sugarcane farmers get timely payments,” a statement read.
The statement added that as of February 13, 2019, the total arrears in the country amounted to Rs 20,167 crore, while based on FRP (fair and remunerative price), the arrears amounted to Rs 18,157 crore.
The arrears are the highest in Uttar Pradesh, (Rs 7,339 crore) followed by Maharashtra (Rs 4,799 crore) and Karnataka (Rs 3,990 crore).
On September 26, last year, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved assistance of over Rs 5500 crore to support the sugar sector by way of offsetting the cost of cane and to facilitate export of sugar from the country. (ANI)
