"Career marked by sheer brilliance and commitment to Indian cricket," BJP Chief Nadda condoles demise of Bishan Singh Bedi

New Delhi [India], October 23 (ANI): Expressing grief on the passing away of legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, BJP national president JP Nadda on Monday said that the late cricketer's illustrious career was marked by "sheer brilliance and commitment to the progress of Indian cricket."
"Deeply saddened by the passing away of the former captain of the Indian cricket team and legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi Ji. Bedi Ji's illustrious career was marked by sheer brilliance and commitment to the progress of Indian cricket," Nadda posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The BJP Chief further said that the former cricketer will be remembered beyond his cricketing talent as an athlete with profound sportsmanship and leadership skills.
"My heartfelt condolences to his family members and well-wishers. Om Shanti," he posted further.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief on the demise of the former Indian cricket team captain.
"The demise of former Indian cricket team captain Shri Bishan Singh Bedi is very sad. He will always live in our memories as a great player. May God grant peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family and fans to bear this loss. Om Shanti," he posted on X.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took to X and offered his condolences to the late player's family in the hour of grief.
"The passing away of the Bharatiya cricket team's former captain and legendary bowler Bishan Singh Bedi is saddening. Bedi ji's contribution to cricket will be forever cherished and his skills will be etched in our memories. My condolences to his family in this hour of grief. May he attain sadgati! Om Shanti," Sarma posted on X.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also called the iconic left-arm spin bowler a beacon light for Indian sports and offered condolences to his family, friends and admirers.
"Saddened at the demise of the legendary Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi. The iconic left-arm spin bowler had brought home many spectacular victories for us and his name is etched in the memory of millions of his fans. A great captain and a strong personality, he is a beacon light for Indian sports. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers," Banerjee posted on X.
Former India captain and legendary spinner passed away today at the age of 77 after a period of prolonged illness.
The Amritsar-born spinner, who played domestic cricket for Delhi, finished his career with 1,560 wickets in first-class cricket --more than any other Indian.
Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed the news. "Former India captain and spinner Bishan Singh Bedi has passed away. It is a very sad news. It's a huge loss for India. He started so many camps in Himachal. I and the whole cricketing family stand with his family."He featured in 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979 and bagged 266 wickets. He also took seven wickets in 10 One-Day Internationals.
Bedi played Test cricket for India from 1966 to 1979 and he formed part of the famous Indian spin quartet (Bedi, EAS Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and S Venkataraghavan). The legendary spinner also captained the national side in 22 Test matches.
Bedi also represented Northamptonshire in English county cricket for many years. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri Award in 1970. (ANI)
