North 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], June 8 (ANI): In a significant achievement, vigilant troops of Border Security Force (BSF) from the Ghojadanga border outpost under the South Bengal Frontier, thwarted a currency smuggling attempt at the international border in North 24 Parganas.
A woman passenger from Howrah district, West Bengal, was apprehended at the BSF checkpoint at land customs station Ghojadanga while illegally carrying Rs. 4,02,200 in Indian currency and 10,500 Bangladeshi Taka from India to Bangladesh.
Acting on specific intelligence received on June 7, 2024, regarding a passport passenger attempting to smuggle a substantial amount of Indian currency, the troops at the BSF Check Post (BCP) were put on high alert.
During routine baggage inspection, the BSF party intercepted a woman and discovered the concealed currencies in multiple poly bags within her luggage. Upon request for supporting documents, the passenger failed to provide any valid documentation and gave inconsistent statements, raising further suspicion.
The woman was immediately apprehended and brought to the Ghojadanga outpost for further questioning.
During the interrogation, she revealed that she had made several trips to Bangladesh to visit her younger sister, Sajida Khatun, residing in Kushkhali, Satkhira, Bangladesh. On this occasion, she was carrying substantial amounts of illegal currency along with gold ornaments (a bracelet weighing 15.040 grams and a gold ring) but caught by BSF at Border.
The apprehended passenger and the seized currency have been handed over to the Customs Department at Ghojadanga for further legal action.
The Public Relations Officer of the South Bengal Frontier A.K Arya, DIG said that BSF remains committed to its mission of safeguarding the nation's borders and preventing unlawful cross-border activities.
The force continues to intensify its vigil and strengthen security measures to combat such nefarious activities effectively. (ANI)
