New Delhi [India], July 19 (ANI): BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday slammed Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi for being "silent" on atrocities against women in Congress-ruled or other INDIA bloc parties-ruled states.
"The Congress Party was silent on the Sandeshkhali incident and the Swati Maliwal assault case. Even today, they are silent on the incidents of atrocities against women in Howrah and Telangana," Poonawalla told reporters here.
"The Supreme Court came up with an order for women's empowerment. Rahul Gandhi did not welcome that order of the Supreme Court. Just holding the Constitution will not do anything. You should also agree to what's written in it," he added.
Bibhav Kumar, an aide of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was accused of physically assaulting AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal.
The Delhi Police on Tuesday filed a charge sheet against Bibhav Kumar in the case in Tis Hazari Court in Delhi.
The court was informed that police have invoked Sections 308, 354, 354 B, 506, 509, and 341, IPC and Section 201 of IPC has been added in the charge sheet.
The Sandeshkhali incident in TMC-ruled West Bengal pertains to multiple allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court rejected the West Bengal government's plea challenging the Calcutta High Court order directing a CBI probe into allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subhas Sarkar had slammed the ruling Trinamool Congress for approaching the top court to protect people involved in mafia and corruption.
"...The West Bengal government approaches the Supreme Court to protect people involved in mafia, corruption ...The Supreme Court gave a decision in the favour of public and victims...The West Bengal government spends money on protecting the people who are working against the public...," Sarkar said speaking to ANI on Friday.
A bench of justices in the Supreme Court, BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, had refused to interfere with the Calcutta HC order, which allowed the CBI to probe into the matter. The court also commented that WB police had done nothing in the matter for months.
Justifying the Calcutta HC decision, the top court said that the high court order pertains to all related incidents.
However, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi for West Bengal, replied that they have done much work related to the case and there can't be a a blanket direction.
However, the apex court was not convinced but made it clear that today's observations in the order shall not influence the trial or future remedies in connection with the case. (ANI)
