Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], October 2 (ANI) : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 155th birth anniversary on Wednesday.
He took part in an event organised on the occasion. Odisha Governor Raghubar Das, State Legislative Assembly speaker Surama Padhy, and state ministers also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary at the premises of the Odisha Legislative Assembly in Bhubaneswar.
He also lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for significant steps towards promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability with the launch of Swachhata Swachhta Abhiyan.
Participating in "Swachhta Abhiyan" on the occasion, the chief minister said in a post on X, "From open defecation-free villages to cleaner cities, the Swachh Bharat Mission, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, has empowered millions and created a cleaner, healthier India. Let's continue this vital journey together".


Swachhta Abhiyan is a nationwide campaign in India to promote hygiene and cleanliness, and eliminate open defecation. The campaign was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014.
Earlier, PM Modi also paid his heartfelt tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, emphasising the lasting impact of Bapu's life and ideals based on truth, harmony and equality, and said that these principles continue to inspire the people of the country.
"On behalf of all countrymen, salutations to Pujya Bapu on his birth anniversary. His life and ideals based on truth, harmony and equality will always remain an inspiration for the countrymen," PM Modi said in a post on X.
On the milestone of ten years for the Swachhata campaign on October 2, PM Modi participated in a cleanliness drive with school children. PM Modi urged citizens of India to participate in the cleanliness initiative to further strengthen the spirit of 'Swachh Bharat.
He will participate in the Swachh Bharat Diwas 2024 program in New Delhi, on Wednesday coinciding with the 155th Gandhi Jayanti today, marking the completion of 10 years since the launch of one of the most significant mass movements for cleanliness--the Swachh Bharat Mission."
"On Gandhi Jayanti today, I became a part of the Swachhata Abhiyan with my young friends. I request all of you to become a part of the cleanliness campaign around you today. This initiative of yours will further strengthen the spirit of 'Swachh Bharat', PM Modi wrote in a post on X.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is also known to be the 'Father of the nation'. The whole nation pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on this day and it is marked as a national holiday.
Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar town of Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi adopted a non-violent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against colonial British rule with utmost patience. This led to India finally achieving its independence in 1947. (ANI)
