Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 21 (ANI): Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on Monday received accolades from the United Nations Climate Change Innovation Workshop for effectively adopting sustainable water procedures and efficient management.
BWSSB Chairman Dr V Ram Prasath Manohar took part in the UN Climate Change 5th Systemic Innovation Workshop. He explained in detail how the board has tackled the water crisis during the shortage, the challenges faced, and the effective management of the water supply.
He said Bangalore city is roughly about 800 square kilometres and about 1.40 crore people reside in the city. The BWSSB is tasked with supplying potable water and also managing the sewage system.
About 60 per cent are dependent on Cauvery water. The remaining 40 per cent is dependent on groundwater sources. Due to the failure of the monsoon, resulting in the depletion of groundwater, more than 50 per cent of bore wells failed. As a result, the dependency on Cauvery water increased suddenly and drastically.
However, the BWSSB efficiently tackled this crisis by adopting innovative technology and sustainable practices. Strict enforcement of judicious practices in using water, installing aerators to prevent indiscriminate use of water, and using modern technology for managing bore wells are some of the methods adopted by the Board for effective management of water crises.
"I am proud to say that we have been able to meet the challenge very effectively," the BWSSB Chairman told the gathering.
The Board Chairman also had a word of caution that the coming days are going to be equally challenging and the Board needs to get itself prepared.
"We want all innovators to see Bengaluru water management as a case study and evolve more sustainable innovation," Ram Prasath Manohar added.
Officers from different parts of the country who had taken part in the workshop made a detailed presentation about the innovative work they have undertaken in their respective cities.
Later, during the interactive session, the participants appreciated the efforts made by the BWSSB Chairman to mitigate the water shortage crisis. (ANI)
