Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 4 (ANI): Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, a BJP MP from Purulia, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention in what he termed the "destruction" of Bengal's education system under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Mahato alleged that the state's education sector has been plagued by corruption, nepotism, and bribery, denying thousands of meritorious students their rightful opportunities.
Referring to his appeal as "The Cost of TMC's Corrupt Education System," Mahato highlighted how Bengal, once known for its academic excellence, has suffered a sharp decline in standards.
"Thousands of meritorious students are being denied their rightful opportunities. The academic standards of Bengal, once a beacon of excellence, have plummeted due to rampant nepotism and
bribery. Young minds are being pushed into a broken system, where corruption, rather than merit, dictates their future," his letter read.
Criticising the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government, Mahato asserted that while India is progressing towards becoming a Vishwaguru under PM Modi's leadership, Bengal is regressing due to "organised corruption."
"Prime Minister, while the rest of India is marching towards becoming Vishwaguru under your visionary leadership, Bengal is being dragged backwards by a government that thrives on organised corruption. The people of Bengal are being denied even the most basic aspects of governance," he stated in the letter.
The Purulia MP urged the central government to intervene and take steps.
"I urge the central government to intervene by ensuring that a full-fledged investigation is conducted into the systematic privatization and corruption in Bengal's education sector, state-sponsored legal defences for corrupt officials are thoroughly scrutinized, strict action is taken against those misusing public funds to protect their criminal activities."
He further said, "The people of Bengal deserve a future where education is a right, not a privilege sold by corrupt politicians. I trust that under your leadership, justice will prevail, and Bengal's youth will once again dream of a brighter future."
Earlier in the day, BJP launched a blistering attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, holding her responsible for large-scale corruption in the state's school recruitment process.
In a press conference, BJP leader Sambit Patra asserted that accountability would be ensured under the rule of law and stated that if the BJP came to power in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee would face legal repercussions.
"Didi jail jayengi, albat jayengi. Hindustan mai kanoon ka shasan hai. The day BJP forms a government in Bengal, the full force of the law will be brought upon Mamata Banerjee," he said.
The party's remarks came a day after the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court's order cancelling the appointment of over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff due to recruitment irregularities.
Addressing the press conference, BJP leader Sambit Patra alleged that Mamata Banerjee's administration has institutionalised corruption and suppressed probes into the scam.
Patra attacked CM Mamata Banerjee's government and said that the Supreme Court had itself said that credibility and legitimacy had been denuded under her governance.
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Calcutta High Court's decision to quash the recruitment of more than 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff by the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) in 2016 for the state-run and aided schools.
The Court further clarified that because the entire recruitment process was vitiated, the candidates whose recruitment was "untainted" will also have to be terminated. However, such candidates will not have to refund any payments made to them.
The top court granted liberty to "untainted" candidates to reapply to their previous jobs in their respective state departments. In such cases, the court stated, they will receive their previously held jobs in their respective departments. (ANI)
