Bengal governor Ananda Bose holds emergency meeting women security

West Bengal governor Ananda Bose held an emergency meeting with the Vice Chancellors and addressed them on the ways and means of women's security in the campuses and society, stated Raj Bhavan Media Cell.

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 5 (ANI): West Bengal Governor Ananda Bose has held an emergency meeting with the Vice Chancellors and addressed them on the ways and means of women's security in the campuses and society, an official statement said.

In the meeting held on Wednesday, Dr P M Nair, former DG of NDRF, and acclaimed international expert on human trafficking issues, addressed the conference on 'Role of Universities in Ensuring Safety of Women and Preventing Trafficking of Women and Children."
The governor discussed all issues, and trends across West Bengal and India and brought out specific ways and means of taking up this in the University system and also in the society as a whole, stated Raj Bhavan Media Cell.
In the context of the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital incident and other recent incidents that shook the public conscience, the steps that were discussed for defending the rights of women included launching an 'Abhaya Campaign' in all universities. This includes setting up 'Anti-human trafficking (AHT) clubs' in the University and colleges thereby empowering the youth to prevent the exploitation and trafficking of women/children and thereby ushering in a society safe for women and children, stated the Bengal Governor's office, Raj Bhavan Media Cell added.
The meeting involved a discussion on addressing online exploitation and online abuses including online trafficking by empowering the youth through the AHT Clubs. The Governor and Chancellor exhorted all universities to join the mission to ensure the safety of women and children in West Bengal. Meanwhile, On Wednesday night, hundreds of people in Kolkatta switched off their lights at their homes and took to the streets on Wednesday night to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Among the protesters were the parents of the deceased doctor. Governor of West Bengal CV Ananda Bose also supported the protest by switching off the lights of the Raj Bhavan and lighting a candle.
