New Delhi [India] February 13 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticised Bharatiya Janata Party's following the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, calling the decision a "belated admission of their inability to govern."
Holding Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'responsible' for the current situation in Manipur, LoP Gandhi question him about his plans to visit the state.
"The imposition of President's Rule in Manipur is a belated admission by the BJP of their complete inability to govern in Manipur. Now, PM Modi can no longer deny his direct responsibility for Manipur. Has he finally made up his mind to visit the state, and explain to the people of Manipur and India his plan to restore peace and normalcy?" Rahul Gandhi wrote on X.
President Rule has been imposed in Manipur, days after BJP leader N Biren Singh resigned as state Chief Minister. The state has witnessed intermittent ethnic violence between the Meitei and the Kuki communities since May 2023.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that the President's Rule bring a "glimmer of hope" in the "war-ravaged state."
"Nearly 2 years after the violence broke out, the Centre has imposed President's Rule when the Congress was all set to bring a no-confidence motion and ensure a dismissal of the disastrous BJP government. While this brings a glimmer of hope in the war-ravaged state, it is the same Central Government that played politics through ex-CM Biren Singh and failed to bring peace despite deploying Central paramilitary forces." Venugopal wrote on X.
Venugopal advised Centre to "depart from its usual politics of hate" in order to establish peace and normalcy in Manipur.
"This will require the Centre to depart from its usual politics of hate and confrontation, and ensure it takes everyone along to establish peace and normalcy in Manipur. We hope this begins a process of reconciliation between all communities, and the Centre conducts a genuine peace-building initiative to bring Manipur out of the crisis it faces today," Venugopal said.
A Sharda Devi, President BJP Manipur said that the state assembly has been placed under suspended animation.
"After the resignation of N Biren Singh, the state assembly has been placed under suspended animation," she said.
Biren Singh, who resigned on Sunday said it has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur.
"I am extremely grateful to the Central government for timely actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interest of every single Manipuri," he wrote in his resignation letter.
Violence had erupted between the Meitei and the Kuki communities in Manipur after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3, 2023, following the Manipur High Court order directing the state to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.
