Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) [India], September 28 (ANI): An autorickshaw driver who was arrested earlier in the day in connection with the Ujjain minor rape case tried to escape from police custody but was later caught, police said on Thursday.
"When we were taking (the accused) to recreate the crime scene, the accused (Bharat Soni) tried to run away, during which he got injured and our police officials also got injured. They are being provided medical assistance. Necessary action is being taken in the case...," Ujjain Superintendent of Police Sachin Sharma said in a press conference on Thursday.
The SP further mentioned that a database is being created of all the autorickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers of the city along with their character verification.
"We will carry out character verification of autorickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers and create a database," he said.
Speaking about another accused in the case, SP Sharma said that a case will be registered against another autorickshaw driver for keeping the police in the dark about the incident.
"There is another auto driver against whom a case will be registered for not informing the police about the incident," he said.
"An attempt was made to spread a narrative that no one helped her (the victim), but during our investigation, we found that people helped her financially, it would have been better if (more) help could have been provided. I thank the people of Indore for keeping faith in the police...," the SP added.
Speaking about the incident wherein the accused tried to give the police a slip, Inspector Ajay Kumar said, "Today, we reached the spot to recreate the scene of crime and recover the clothes worn by the girl. Sensing an opportunity, Bharat Soni tried to escape. Police personnel chased him and caught him. During this, he fell on the cement road and received injuries in his arms and legs."
The accused, Bharat Soni was brought to Civil Hospital in the city where he is presently being treated, police said.
