Ganderbal (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], February 9 (ANI): Ganderbal Deputy Commissioner of Police Jatin Kishore assured swift relief measures after a massive fire at the main market of Sonamarg and said that the administration has assessed the damages and will submit a report for compensation on Sunday.
The incident which took place on Saturday in the Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district reportedly damaged 50-60 shops in the vicinity.

Speaking to ANI, the DCP said, "An unfortunate incident unfolded here in Sonamarg yesterday wherein many shops were damaged. Our revenue and fire services team is here. We have assessed the damaged shops and we will forward the report today so the shop owners can get some relief."
"We are also working towards issues raised regarding fire services in the area. We will work swiftly to set up a dedicated fire service here. We have identified an area where fire services can be set up," said the DCP.

A local resident, Manzoor spoke to ANI about the fire in Sonamarg and said, "The lack of a fire and emergency vehicle here is shameful. The onus lies on the politicians and the administration. The Sonamarg Trade Union has been requesting a fire and emergency vehicle for the last 20 years."
"Another local, Umar Farooq, said, "The Sonamarg Trade Union has been requesting a fire service station for many years, yet, the government did not budge an inch. They (the government) earn a lot of revenue from Sonamarg but have not invested anything in Sonamarg for the welfare and protection of people's property. If they have any shame left, they should build a fire service station here."

MLA from Kangan, Mehar Ali also spoke about the incident and said, "This accident happened because of a lack of a fire service vehicle. I had asked the CO, Sonamarg for a government space for the fire service team. But he did not do anything."
Alleging the administration for the incident, Mehar Ali said, "The culprit of this accident is CO Sonamarg. I have even said that I will pay for the construction of a fire services building and the government will give the land. Immediately, today, we will get a space of 1 room and shift the fire services team there till a new designated building is made for them. I promise that in the next week to 10 days, a fire services vehicle will also be stationed here."
Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah promised swift aid and strong support to those affected by the blaze.
"Deeply saddened by the devastating fire incident in the Sonamarg market. My office is in constant touch with the local administration to ensure all possible assistance reaches those in need. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and businesses. In this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with you and will do everything possible to support your recovery, " said the Chief Minister's office. (ANI)
