Karimganj (Assam) [India], May 31 (ANI): Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika took stock of the flood situation in Karimganj district on Thursday.
The Assam Minister visited the flood-hit areas of Ratabari assembly constituency and inspected the riverbank embankments at Patiala Village Panchayat in Karimganj district, which have been severely affected by swift currents of the Singla river.
Pijush Hazarika directed the engineers and Water Resources Department officials to take immediate steps to deal with the critical situation. The Assam Minister also instructed officials to repair the breached embankments within 15 days.
Nearly 37,000 people, including 10,000 children in 100 villages in Karimganj district have been affected in the deluge.

In Nilambazar Revenue Circle, the embankment of the Longai River breached at Chengjuripar, damaging properties at the nearby villages. Additionally, breaches in the Longai River embankments at South Bilbari, two locations in Kochubari, and Muradpur in Patharkandi Revenue Circle have caused widespread flooding.
To assess the current flood situation, the State Water Resources Minister, Pijush Hazarika, visited the affected areas on Thursday.
The minister assured all necessary assistance to the flood victims and assured that the breached points in the affected embankments would be repaired within the next 15 days using Geo Mega Tube technology to mitigate flood issues during the upcoming monsoon season. He directed the departmental officials to undertake these repair measures immediately.
The minister also informed that relief camps have been set up to provide aid to the flood victims, and more camps will be established if the need arises. Rescue operations involving the SDRF, local communities, revenue circle offices, and fire and emergency services have been initiated to assist the affected populace. Adequate medical teams have also been deployed.
These relief camps have been stocked with sufficient relief materials and medical provisions.
According to the District Disaster Management Authority, the flood has affected 176,723 livestock in the district. Tragically, a 36-year-old man named Islam Uddin from Purbagul, Kanai Bazar in Patharkandi Revenue Circle, has lost his life due to the floods.
Mridul Yadav, Karimganj District Commissioner, who had accompanied the Minister during the visit, reported that the administration is actively engaged in rescue operations, operating relief camps, distributing relief materials, providing medical aid, and ensuring potable water supply to the affected people.
He also assured that there are adequate stocks of all essential goods, cooking gas, and petrol-diesel in the district. (ANI)
