Assam: Inland Water Transport Department suspends operation of all departmental boats in Guwahati-based ferry services

Following the rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River, inundating surrounding areas, the Inland Water Transport Department, Assam has temporarily suspended the operation of all departmental boats, vessels in the Guwahati based ferry services.

Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 29 (ANI): Following the rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River, inundating surrounding areas, the Inland Water Transport Department, Assam has temporarily suspended the operation of all departmental boats, vessels in the Guwahati based ferry services, officials said on Tuesday. 
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) report, the water level of the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger level mark at a level of 49.87 metres.
Following incessant rainfall in parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the water levels of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are rising and crossing the danger level mark at many places in the state.
The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Sunday, with over 53,000 people across six districts of the state reported marooned. 
As many as 17 districts are currently reeling under the deluge. The worst hit is Lakhimpur district followed by Dhemaji. 
Nearly 24,000 locals have been affected in Dhemaji while another 12,000, 8,500 and 7,500 have been stranded in Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, and Dibrugarh districts respectively.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the flood has affected 120 villages under 11 revenue circles and submerged nearly 3000 hectares of crop area in the flood-hit districts. (ANI)
