Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 20 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that Assam's Maternal Mortality Rate (MRR), which was 480 in the year 2006, observed a decline to 125 in 2022, which is currently one of the sharpest falls in maternal deaths across the country.
On Thursday, CM Sarma shared a post on his official 'X' handle to inform about the development. CM Himanta said that the "transformation" reflects the state government's "unwavering commitment" to maternal and child health.
He mentioned that every number in the decline in numbers represents a "saved life", a mother embraced by her family and a secure future.
"A Landmark Milestone in Assam's Healthcare Journey. From a Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 480 in 2006 to 125 in 2022 -- Assam has recorded one of the sharpest declines in maternal deaths in India. This transformation reflects our unwavering commitment to maternal and child health -- a journey I have personally been part of, first as Health Minister and now as Chief Minister. A matter of immense personal satisfaction. Every number in this decline represents a life saved, a mother embraced by her family, and a future made secure. I thank our tireless doctors, nurses, ASHA workers, and health officials across Assam. Your dedication has made this possible", Himanta Biswa Sarma's 'X' post read.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented appointment letters to 400 Medical and Health Officers at a programme held at the GMCH auditorium in Guwahati. With these 400 appointments, the present government achieved a cumulative total of 1,20,359 government appointments provided to the state's youth.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma said that ever since this present dispensation has come to power, the government has been steadfast in addressing the demand-supply mismatch of doctors.
"It was the triggering factor for the government to increase the number of medical colleges across the state."
He also said that the 13 medical colleges that are functional at present are producing around 1600 doctors annually. (ANI)
