Guwahati (Assam) [India], November 6 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday night visited the site of the new flyover which will be constructed to connect Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati area in Guwahati.
After the citizens' groups took to the streets and staged protests by demanding the preservation of trees around Dighalipukhuri which is a historic tank of Guwahati city, the Assam Chief Minister told media that the state government has decided that the trees will not be cut and the length of the new flyover will be now short.
Criticising a section of people who also took part in the protest, the Assam Chief Minister said that a section of people is always trying to destabilize the government as well as the situation and they don't want development.
Earlier, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X - "I want to assure you that the government is deeply committed to preserving our city's heritage and environment while advancing infrastructure. In constructing the flyovers from Dighalupukhuri to Noonmati, we are sincerely working to protect the old trees in the area. I urge all stakeholders to allow the Public Works Department a few days to explore an alternative proposal and assess its feasibility."
Earlier in February this year, the Assam Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of an over 5 km long four-lane elevated corridor from Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati with an estimated cost of Rs 852.68 crore. (ANI)
