Guwahati (Assam) [India], October 26 (ANI): Assam unit of the BJP on Sunday held a rally in Guwahati, titled 'I am Zubeen Fan, We Are Also Zubeen Fans', demanding justice for the late Asamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on September 19 under mysterious circumstances.
Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, allegedly while swimming, a day before he was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival.
During the rally, Assam Minister Ranoj Pegu accused the Congress of "politicising the unfortunate" death of the singer and highlighted the steps taken by the goverment in connection with the matter.
"It is a very unfortunate incident for us that Zubeen Garg is no longer with us today; he has died, and our opposition, Congress, is politicising that death. Zubeen Garg's death should be investigated immediately. The government has taken two significant actions. Firstly, it has formed an SIT for investigation, and secondly, a charge sheet has been submitted to the High Court for inquiry, with a one-man commission of inquiry also established..." Pegu said.
BJP MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi told ANI that the BJP has started a 'Nyay Yatra' and called for a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
"The BJP Guwahati has initiated a 'Nyay Yatra' in response to Zubeen Garg's death. Many people worldwide mourn his passing and are calling for a swift investigation into the circumstances of his mysterious death. We urge the court to deliver justice for him and to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Our chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, will be present, and under his guidance, all BJP Guwahati workers will take part in this 'Nyay Yatra.'"
The SIT/CID team has arrested seven persons, including the main event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg's manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg (suspended APS officer), bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, and two PSOs, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, in connection with the investigation.
Earlier, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi claimed that the State government is hindering supporters of Zubeen Garg from honouring him by creating various obstacles during a candlelight march held by the Congress to demand justice for the late singer.
"In Assam, people wish to pay tribute to Zubeen Garg, but the state government has been attempting to undermine this call for justice over the past few days. The government is creating various obstacles for his supporters who seek to honour him. Despite this resistance, there is a strong sentiment among the people for justice for Zubeen Garg and an appeal for the government not to hinder their peaceful efforts," he said. (ANI)
