Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], October 23 (ANI): The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday extended the stay on the demolition of alleged encroachments in Bahraich until November 4.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government assured the Supreme Court that no action would be taken until Wednesday regarding the demolition notices issued against buildings linked to individuals allegedly involved in the October 13 violence in Bahraich.
The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) informed the Supreme Court that the Allahabad High Court was also handling the matter. During an urgent hearing, the High Court on Sunday granted an additional 15 days for the affected parties to respond to the notices issued by the Uttar Pradesh authorities.
"If they (the UP authorities) want to take the risk of flouting our order, it's their choice," the bench remarked.
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court against the demolition notices issued by the Uttar Pradesh authorities to several people, including Abdul Hameed, an accused in the Bahraich violence case, over alleged illegal construction at his residence.
Three people jointly filed the petition against the demolition notice, urging the Supreme Court to quash the notices issued on October 17, 2024, which were pasted on the night of October 18.
The petitioners also sought interim relief to halt the proposed demolition and maintain the status quo from the date of notice issuance on October 17.
Ramgopal Mishra was killed, and several others were injured, after clashes between two communities erupted during the Durga idol immersion procession in the Mahasi area of Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, on October 13. (ANI)
