African nationals files complain over wrongful restraint

New Delhi [India], Nov 24 (ANI): The Delhi Police on Saturday registered a case and initiated a probe on the basis of a complaint filed by two African nationals who were wrongfully restrained by locals in Kakrola area of New Delhi on November 22 following an abduction rumour.
The complaint was filed by two women who were among the six African nationals who were rescued on the evening of November 22.
The police on Thursday rescued four Tanzanian and two Nigerian nationals from the aforementioned area after they were restrained by locals, following an unsubstantiated rumour spread in the area regarding the abduction of a boy.
The complaint has been filed at the Dwarka (North) police station, under Sections 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The women were residing in the area as tenants for the past two months. The cops rushed to the spot when they received information about them being restrained.
The police had apparently received multiple calls against them including one that alleged that they have abducted a child. However, it was later revealed that the abduction call was a hoax.
In a statement, the Delhi Police denied the attack being racial in nature and said, "We received a call that people were gathering. We reached there, dispersed the crowd and rescued two Tanzanian women. The crowd had gathered following abduction rumours. Later, we received a call of abduction, which turned out to be a hoax. We rescued the (remaining) Nigerian and Tanzanian nationals." (ANI)
