40-year-old differently-abled man commits suicide outside Andhra Bhavan

According to Delhi Police, around 12:30 am, staff of Prince Hotel located at SPM T-point on Church Mission Road informed the beat staff that Room No. 205 was locked and the guest inside was not responding despite repeated knocking.

Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday raised concerns over security in the Union Territory following the assassination attempt on National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, questioning what it means for the safety of ordinary citizens if such a high-profile leader can be targeted.

The attack occurred when a man, allegedly carrying a loaded pistol, attempted to shoot Farooq Abdullah at a marriage party in Jammu's Royal Park in the Greater Kailash area. According to the police, the security personnel of the National Security Guard (NSG), who were deployed with the protectee, immediately swung into action and thwarted the attempt.

The man accused of attempting to assassinate Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief Farooq Abdullah is currently being held at Gangyal Police Station in Jammu.

"He (Farooq Abdullah) was attending a function. We were all with them. When we were departing from the function, a man came from behind, and he ran very fast and placed his revolver on the back of Doctor Sahib (Farooq Abdullah), and he fired, but his shot missed. The people who were with Doctor Sahib's (Farooq Abdullah) security people caught him in a moment, made him fall, pressed him, and, with great difficulty, we took the pistol from him. Then we left from there and came back home," Jan told ANI.

"Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was asked to get within range to discharge shot. It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot & ensured that the assassination attempt was foiled. There are more questions than answers at the moment including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG protected former CM," Omar Abdullah posted on X.

The police informed that the firing incident occurred during a function held at a marriage venue in the city. Authorities said that a man suspected of opening fire was promptly taken into custody, and further investigation into the matter is underway.

In a landmark first, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday permitted passive euthanasia for a 31-year-old man from Ghaziabad who has been in a persistent vegetative state for over a decade, observing that continuing life-sustaining treatment would no longer be in the patient's best interest.

"The government should clarify - what is the amount of reserves in our country presently, how much is left, how much can be consumed over how many days, and by when are they expecting that the LPG supply would be normalised. I believe the government is having talks; the people of this nation also need to be told about the current situation. If there is a crisis of energy, then by when the government plans to resolve it should also be clarified to the people, especially to the common man," he said.
