2G case: Mukul Rohatgi takes pot shots at Swamy

New Delhi [India], Dec 21 (ANI): Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi on Thursday hit back at BJP leader Subramanian Swamy saying that he is habitual of making false allegations.

Rohatgi's remarks came after Swamy slammed him for welcoming the verdict in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case and said such people should not be made law officers.

"Subramanian Swamy is in the habit of making wild and false allegations. I had appeared for some of these people at the time of grant of bail in SC, in 2012. After, I became Attorney General, I had nothing to do with the case. To make personal allegations is meaningless," Rohatgi told ANI.

Swamy, on whose public interest litigation (PIL) the CBI probe was ordered in the case, earlier in the day, snubbed the verdict in the muti-crore scam and said, "Mukul Rohatgi has welcomed this judgement. When he was appointed Attorney General, I had written to the Prime Minister opposing his appointment, as Rohatgi was the advocate of many of the accused companies, including Unitech. These people should not be made law officers because a wrong signal will go that we are not serious about corruption."

Earlier in the day, all accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam cases, including former telecom minister A Raja and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi, were acquitted by a Special CBI court.

The verdict was announced nearly seven years after the first arrest was made by the CBI in 2011.

The alleged scam relates to the granting of 2G spectrum licence allocations in 2007-08, which caused, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the public exchequer.

It was among the major corruption scandals that came to light during the second term of the UPA government headed by former prime minister Manmohan Singh. (ANI)
