New Delhi [India], Mar 19 (ANI): The country’s welfare is more important than that of the party, said Congress party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala here on Tuesday.
“Whenever two parties form an alliance, there is a kind of give and take. What you are witnessing right now is just that. The country’s welfare is more important than that of the party,” he said, while addressing media persons here.
Referring to the SP-BSP alliance, Surjewala said: “We respect these two parties. We agree with some of their views and disagree on some. Different parties have different ideologies.”
“When a party tries to increase its ideology’s outreach, other parties obviously feel some discomfort. I believe that is what has happened with SP-BSP in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
His remark comes a day after SP president Akhilesh Yadav endorsed BSP chief Mayawati’s statement that SP-BSP alliance can alone defeat the BJP without Congress’ support in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
“Moreover, the Congress party contests elections from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Tripura to Porbandar. In some areas, the Congress party has a stronghold and in some other regional parties have a stronghold. Sometimes alliance happens before polls. Sometimes we come together after the poll,” he said.
Talking about the possibilities of an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Surjewala said: “Congress president Rahul Gandhi has spoken about it in details.”
Meanwhile, NCP leader Sharad Pawar intervened in the ongoing war of words and possible alliance discussions in Delhi between the AAP and the Congress.
Multiple sources in all three parties have confirmed to ANI that Sharad Pawar is playing the role of mediator between all the parties to stitch an alliance in Delhi to mount a unified campaign against the BJP.
Media reports on Monday claimed that Delhi unit Congress chief Sheila Dikshit has penned a letter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, stating that a tie-up with AAP would harm Congress’ prospects in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
The Lok Sabha elections have been scheduled to start from April 11 and will go on till May 19 in seven phases. The counting of votes will take place on May 23. (ANI)
