New Delhi (India), Sept 23 (ANI): The saree is a timeless garment which is a synonym for grace and elegance, it sees no bar in terms of age or style. To celebrate the magnificent nine yards, a well-curated collection of handloom, handcrafted and exclusively made sarees is on display in the national capital.
'The Grand Saree Fair' by Dastakar is aimed at bringing greater awareness about various types of sarees and is being organised from 20 to 28 September at the Nature Bazaar Venue, Kisan Haat.
Though the exhibition is a regular affair, this year it is eyeing younger crowds by calling onto the various styles of drapes that make the garment relevant to the wearer.
The organisation, which works with craftspeople across India, also aims to increase awareness about the various types of sarees and tell the story of artists who dedicate their lives in keeping the Indian culture alive.
"Textiles are the warp and weft of India. Their threads bind us together and give us a history and identity," said Laila Tyabji, one of the founders of Dastkar, who is also a designer, writer, and craft activist.
"Examining these strands - each region and community having its own distinctive weaving, wearing, and motif tradition - helps us better understand ourselves and our past, present, and future," added Tyabji.
From Jamdani to Mangalgiri and Batik to Block Printing, visitors can lay hands on a variety of sarees. Shibori, Ikat Weaving, Benarasi, Chikankari, Chanderi, Khadi, Kota, Applique, Patchwork , Kotpad, and Madhubani are also on display.
Dastakar is also running #mysareestyle campaign across various social media platforms in which many young women were seen picking up the ageless garment and draping it in their own version of it - sporting it with shoes or crop tops. (ANI)
