Long-term use of the food dye Allura Red may increase the incidence of IBDs, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis, according to Waliul Khan of McMaster University. Research using experimental animal models of IBD has shown that prolonged exposure to Allura Red AC is detrimental to intestinal health and promotes inflammation.

"Executive function underlies your ability to engage in goal-directed behaviors," said University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign kinesiology and community health professor Naiman Khan, who led the study with graduate student Arden McMath and food science and human nutrition professor Sharon Donovan.
