Stockholm, [Sweden] Oct 5 (ANI): The Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 has been awarded to rape survivor and Human rights activist Nadia Murad and Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege jointly for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
According to an official release, Murad refused to accept the social codes that required women to remain silent about the abuses they were subjected to. It is her "uncommon courage" to recount "her own sufferings and speaking up on behalf of other victims" which helped in bringing the issue to the world stage.
Nadia is one of the estimated 3,000 Yazidi girls and women who were the victims of rape and several other vicious forms of abuses by the ISIS. The abuses were systematic and part of a military strategy, which became a weapon in the fight against Yazidis and other religious minorities.
"In Nadia Murad's village, several hundred people were massacred. The younger women, including underage children, were abducted and held as sex slaves. While a captive of the IS, Nadia Murad was repeatedly subjected to rape and other abuses," the release further read.
Gynaecologist Denis Mukwege, won the prize as he spent a large part of his adult life in helping the victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He is well known for condemning impunity for mass rape and criticism of the Congolese government and other countries for not doing enough to stop the use of sexual violence against women as a strategy and weapon of war. (ANI)
