New Delhi (India), Apr 15 (ANI): The Bangladesh High Commission here on Monday celebrated ‘Pohela Boishakh’ with enthusiasm to mark the first day of the New Year as per the Bengali calendar.
Pohela Boishakh’ is observed by Bengalis all across the world irrespective of geographical location but the occasion has a special significance for Bengalis in Bangladesh and in Bengali speaking areas of India including West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam.
Children were colourfully dressed, while women donned red-bordered ‘sarees.’ Men sported ‘pyjama-punjabi kurtas’ for the occasion. They greeted each other with Shubho Noboborsho on the occasion.
The High Commission also hosted a special musical performance by renowned Bangladeshi singer Samina De, who rendered some hit songs of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
With the beat of drums and ‘dugdugi,’ a traditional musical instrument, children, accompanied by women, went around the mission’s Maitree Hall in staging the Mangal Shobhajatra, waving replicas of birds, animals, boats, and masks highlighting the spirit of secularism and cultural tradition of Bengalis.
They were greeted with thunderous applause from the audience comprising the Bengali community of the national capital and the members of the mission. (ANI)
