Imphal (Manipur) [India], Jan 18 (ANI): Agriculture is the predominant occupation of the people of Manipur and the main source of livelihood of the region. It also forms a major share of the total State Domestic Product.
To further strengthen the agri-sector and to motivate farmers to share innovative ideas, a three-day long fair, Central Agricultural University (CAU)-Regional Agri Fair, was recently held at the CAU campus at Iroisemba in Manipur.
The theme of the fair was "Agripreneurship for Attracting Rural Youth to Agriculture." Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Yumnam Khemchand inaugurated the fair at the College of Agriculture Sports Ground in Iroisemba.
More than 1,000 farmers from the region assembled at the fair to share their innovative ideas. Around 52 stalls from the states of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Sikkim were erected in the fair. Fruit and vegetable show, farmers science congress, flower arrangement show, ornamental foliage show, bonsai show, farmers innovation show, farmers-scientists interaction and cultural night were some of the major attractions at the fair.
Three Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of Assam Agricultural University also showcased their innovations at the fair.
Talking about the motive behind organising the fair, M. Premjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, said, "We like to take technologies from the farmers as many farmers have practical experience, innovative ideas. So, for the first time, we are organising a farmer science congress. Around 30 farmers will highlight their innovative ideas and it will be compiled. If required, our scientist will re-asset and the ideas will be given to the other fellow farmers."
At the inaugural function, Khemchand Singh also conferred the Dr. H.K. Jain Central Agricultural University Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research in the North-Eastern states to Principal Scientist at Assam Agricultural University, Dr. Badal Bhattacharya. (ANI)
