No separate license required for building EV charging stations: Power Ministry

New Delhi [India], April 16 (ANI): The Ministry of Power has clarified that companies will henceforth not require any separate license for setting up charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Battery charging is a service provided by the owner of the charging station to earn revenue.Under the charging process, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy, which is eventually stored in the battery to run an electric vehicle.

This activity doesn’t involve any transmission, distribution or trading of electricity, which otherwise would mandate the owners of charging stations to have a separate license, as per the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003.

Commenting on the clarification, Sohinder Gill, Director (Corporate Affairs), Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), said, “We welcome the government's clarification. This was one of the major impediments in building a stable charging ecosystem in the country. Similarly, the government should also address other related issues like acquisition of land, along with fiscal and non-fiscal incentives. This will encourage local and foreign investors to invest in the Indian charging infrastructure and cater to the growth of the EV industry.” (ANI)
