New Delhi [India], May 27 (ANI): Criminal prosecution by the Income Tax Department has witnessed a sharp increase of more than 100 percent during the last three years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government. As per a report card given to Prime Minister Office by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in a review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi, it has been seen that around 2500 people have been prosecuted between 2014 to April 2017 against 1133 people who were prosecuted between financial year 2011-12 to 2013-14, said sources. This is around 116 percent increase in criminal prosecution done by the Income Tax Department. Offences compounded and conviction also saw an increase. During the last three years, offences compounded by the Income Tax Department have seen an increase of 168 percent. 3128 cases of compounded offences were registered in last three years as compared to 1163 cases between 2011 to 2014. Conviction ratio has also increased during this period. The Income Tax Department successfully got 79 persons convicted during the three years of the Modi Government. This is 21 percent higher than conviction cases during the financial year 2011-12 to 2013-14.This is not an end. The Income Tax department carried out over 1100 searches and surveys immediately after demonetisation and detected undisclosed income of over Rs 5,400 crores, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the Rajya Sabha in second week of April. The Income Tax Department has identified 18 lakh people,e whose tax profiles were not in line with the cash deposits made by them in the demonetisation period and online responses were sought. In addition to this Income Tax Directorates of Investigation have identified more than 400 benami transactions up to 23 May, 2017. Provisional attachment of properties under the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Rules, 2016 has been done in more than 240 cases. The market value of properties under attachment is more than Rs. 600 crores. To speed up action against benamidars and Blackmoney holders, the Income Tax Department has now setup 24 dedicated Benami Prohibition Units. (ANI)
